Tracking down striking distance keywords in Google Search Console is the most reliable way to increase organic traffic without starting from scratch. A striking distance keyword is a search query where a page on your site currently ranks somewhere between position eight and position twenty. Google already trusts your domain and this specific URL enough to place it near the top of the pile. The search engine just needs a slightly stronger signal of relevance to push it onto page one.
The math behind page two rankings
The math behind this strategy is entirely based on click-through rate curves. A page ranking at position eleven might receive thousands of impressions but zero clicks, because users rarely click through to the second page of search results. Moving that exact same page from position eleven to position three does not change the number of impressions it generates. It simply changes the click-through rate from a fraction of a percent to roughly ten percent. You capture traffic that is already looking right at your site but scrolling past it.
Filtering the performance report

Finding these opportunities requires isolating the correct data layer. Open your web browser and navigate to the search results report under the performance tab. The default view typically shows total clicks and total impressions over a three-month period. Three months is too long for this specific task. Algorithm updates, seasonal shifts, and new competitor content can skew a ninety-day average. I prefer to click the date filter and change it to the last twenty-eight days.
Next, enable all four metric badges at the top of the chart. You need to see total clicks, total impressions, average click-through rate, and average position. Scroll down to the table below the chart. By default, this table lists the queries driving traffic to your site. This raw list contains hundreds or thousands of queries, many of which rank at position fifty or position one. You need to filter out the noise.
Click the filter icon above the table and select the position metric. Set the condition to show only queries with a position greater than 7.9. This instantly removes your top-performing keywords from the view. You do not want to risk editing a page that is already ranking in the top three positions. Exporting and structuring the raw data
While you can apply a second filter to show positions less than twenty, the web interface is difficult to manipulate for deeper analysis. It is much more efficient to export this filtered data into a spreadsheet. Click the export button in the top right corner of the dashboard and download the data as a CSV file, or pipe it directly into Google Sheets.
Open your downloaded file. The spreadsheet gives you the freedom to run calculations on the data that the web interface blocks. First, freeze the top row and apply a standard data filter to all columns. Click the filter icon on the position column and set a custom condition so it only displays rows where the value is between 8 and 20.
Calculating the true click opportunity
Now you have a clean list of striking distance keywords. Sorting this list strictly by impressions is the default instinct, but I find it mathematically flawed. A query with ten thousand impressions at position twenty is much harder to move than a query with two thousand impressions at position nine. You need a formula to calculate the actual click delta based on realistic movement.
Create a new column in your spreadsheet called target clicks. In the first empty row, I write a formula multiplying the impressions cell by 0.10. This assumes a ten percent click-through rate if you successfully move the keyword to position three. Create another column called opportunity delta. Subtract the current clicks cell from your new target clicks cell. Sort the entire spreadsheet by this opportunity delta column in descending order.
Mapping the query to the ranking URL
The queries at the top of this spreadsheet are your highest-priority tasks. Take the first query on the list and return to the web interface. Paste that exact query into the top search bar filter. Scroll down to the table, and switch the tab from queries to pages. This is a critical step. You cannot optimize a keyword in a vacuum. You have to know exactly which HTML document on your server is currently ranking for it.
Diagnosing the content gap
Open an incognito browser window and search for your target query. Look closely at the web pages ranking in the top three spots. You are looking for search intent. If your ranking page is a short technical reference document, but the top three results are long-form, step-by-step tutorials, you have a format mismatch. Google has determined that users searching this query want a tutorial. You cannot force a reference document to rank for a tutorial query.
If the top results match your format, you simply have a content gap. The competing pages answer a specific question or cover a subtopic that your page ignores. Open the top three competing URLs and look at their document structure. Read their secondary headings. Look at the related searches section at the bottom of the results page. You will quickly spot the missing subtopic that is keeping your page stuck.
Executing an inline content update
Fixing a content gap requires an inline update. Open your markdown file or your content management system. Do not rewrite the existing text. Rewriting text destroys the relevance signals that got you to page two in the first place. Instead, add a new secondary heading that directly addresses the missing subtopic. Write three to four paragraphs of dense, specific information under that heading. Include a code block or a terminal command if it fits the context.
Save the file and push the update to your live server. Copy the URL of the updated page and paste it into the URL inspection tool at the top of the search console interface. Hit enter, wait for the tool to fetch the status, and click the button to request indexing. This puts your URL into the priority crawl queue. The crawler will fetch the page, parse the new heading, and recalculate your relevance for the target query.
Branching out with dedicated articles

Sometimes, the query in your spreadsheet reveals a completely different problem. Your page might rank at position fourteen for a query, but the intent of that query deserves its own dedicated document. For example, a general page about server deployment might rank for a specific query comparing two different hosting providers. Adding a comparison section to your general deployment page dilutes its primary topic.
This scenario requires spinning up a brand new article. I leave the original page exactly as it is, and author a new document optimized specifically for the striking distance keyword. Once the new article is published, I go back to the original page that was ranking on page two. I add a single sentence mentioning the comparison, and link to the new article using the exact query as the anchor text. This passes the established relevance directly to the new URL.
